LONDON: Former England and Newcastle manager Sir Bobby Robson died on Friday at the age of 76 after a long battle with cancer.
Robson, whose first brush with the disease that would ultimately claim him was in 1992, led England to the World Cup semi-finals in 1990 before leaving to manage a host of top European clubs including PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona and finally his boyhood team Newcastle. NEW YORK: Things that grew rapidly in 2008 included home foreclosures, government deficits and the ranks of the jobless. More encouragingly, remittances to developing countries also expanded. BIRMINGHAM: Australia captain Ricky Ponting overtook Allan Border as his country’s leading run-scorer in Test cricket on the second day of the third Ashes Test against England here on Friday.
Ponting went into this match needing just 25 runs to surpass former captain Border’s mark of 11,174 runs and move up into third place in the all-time list of Test run-scorers behind Sachin Tendulkar (12,773) and Brian Lara (11,953). Read the rest of this entry »

NEW YORK: A U.S.-trained Pakistani scientist accused of being an al-Qaida operative is competent to stand trial, a judge ruled Wednesday as he rejected the finding of a defense expert who concluded she was mentally ill. U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman based his ruling largely on the findings of three other experts who concluded the woman was faking mental illness to evade trial or improve the chance she would be returned to Pakistan. BAGHDAD: US Defence Secretary Robert Gates on Wednesday dangled the prospect of a faster withdrawal of US troops as he urged Iraq’s Arab and Kurdish leaders to settle their feuds. Gates told reporters after a two-day visit to Iraq that there was “at least some chance for a modest acceleration” of plans for the drawdown of American troops this year. DHAKA: Record rainfall in Bangladesh capital Dhaka has claimed the lives of at least nine people, besides disrupting normal life extensively. Reports in several Bangladeshi dailies, including the Daily Star and The Independent quoted the Met Office as saying on Tuesday that Dhaka received 290 mm of rainfall over a six-hour period. VIRGINIA: Virginia Tech undergrads packed an all-terrain buggy with technology lifted from the university’s DARPA Urban Challenge entry to create a car the blind can drive.
The semi-autonomous vehicle uses a laser range finder, voice software and other sensory technology, and it worked flawlessly when blind drivers took the wheel on a closed course. Advocates for the blind joined the lead researcher in calling the vehicle a breakthrough in independent living for the visually impaired.
“We are not only excited about the vehicle itself, but also the potential spinoff technologies from this project that could end up helping the blind,” Dennis Hong, the director of the university’s Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory said. Read the rest of this entry »

KARACHI: The number of CNG stations outgrew 3000 during the current fiscal year in the country.
Talking to Geo News Wednesday, CNG Stations Owners Association Chairman Malik Khuda Bux said the number of CNG stations stands at 2941, while, 41 others being installed with the machinery at the moment. He said 100 pumping stations have licenses and they may start functioning any time. Khuda Bux said the number of CNG cars rose to 2,191,000 and three to four percent increase has been recorded in the CNG sale owing to the raise in prices of petroleum products.

KARACHI: The benchmark KSE-100 Index of Karachi Stock Exchange lost 138 points to close at 7,536 on Wednesday.
The market opened in the positive zone but the trend turned into negative as investors opted to off-load their holdings on expectation of lower cut off yield on Treasury Bills’ auction. The trade volume stood at 110 million shares today.
Fauji Cement emerged as today’s volume leader which shed paisas 32 to close at Rs7.79.
KSE-30 Index witnessed a slide of 210 points to peg at 7,994.

JAKARTA: The five-star hotels hit by suicide bombers in Indonesia’s capital nearly two weeks ago reopened Wednesday with tighter security, officials said.
Attackers detonated explosives-laden luggage near the hotel lounges of the J.W. Marriott and Ritz-Carlton in Jakarta on July 17, killing themselves, seven victims and wounding more than 50 others. Read the rest of this entry »
