LOS ANGELES: Disney’s $4 billion purchase of ‘Iron Man’ moviemaker Marvel Entertainment signals a possible wave of media industry consolidation, but the cash to do deals may come from India or China, not Hollywood or Wall Street, Reuters reported. Movie sequels lift summer box office to new record

LOS ANGELES: Summer box office sales narrowly hit a new record in North America, with a little help from an angry memo written by ‘Transformers’ director Michael Bay. The filmmaker in May accused Paramount Pictures executives of fumbling the marketing campaign for his June 24 release ‘Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”Right now we are not an event. We are just a sequel, which is very different,’ he wrote in the missive that was leaked to the media.

Fortunately for both parties, if not for the overwhelming majority of critics who eviscerated the big-bang spectacle, Paramount’s marketing plan kicked into high gear and the movie became the top draw at the summer box office in North America. Read the rest of this entry »

Jackson burial rescheduled on September 3

LOS ANGELES: The date of the funeral for pop legend Michael Jackson has been changed to September 3, the singer’s spokesman said Friday. Jackson was scheduled to be laid to rest August 29, on what would have been his 51st birthday. The private ceremony will still take place at Glendale Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California, according to a statement from Ken Sunshine. No reason was given for the change in date. The ceremony “will be limited to family and close friends,” the statement said. Jackson died June 25 of cardiac arrest. The famed entertainer was 50. The release date for the movie drawing on Jackson’s rehearsal footage was announced Thursday. “Michael Jackson: This Is It” will run in theaters worldwide for two weeks only beginning October 28, according to media. Tickets for the film go on sale Sunday, September 27, Sony said in a news release Thursday. “Audiences will be given a privileged and private look at the singer, dancer, filmmaker, architect, and genius as he creates and perfects his final show,” media said. Kenny Ortega, who was working with Jackson to create the “This Is It” concert, is also directing the documentary.

JULIE & JULIA (2009) English movie review

I was lucky enough to receive tickets for an advance screening, and was plenty excited about attending.

There was a slight hiccup when someone started the film 15 minutes before it was meant to start so they stopped it ten minutes in and then restarted it again at the actual time. This actually was not annoying at all because it gave me a chance to look at the background details. Mid-20th century Paris is beautifully rendered and early 20th century New York is given gritty charm with a primary setting of an apartment over a pizza parlor.
Now I know it was an advance screening and everyone was excited to be there, thus much more prone to laugh, but honestly, this film had brilliant moments of humor in it. Myself, friends, and the rest of audience had a number of laugh-out-loud moments. A lot of these stem from the mannerisms of Julia Child, which are as incredibly endearing as they are humorous.   Read full review here>>

ROME: Michael Moore’s film on the financial crisis and the directorial debut of US fashion designer Tom Ford will compete for the Golden Lion award at this year’s Venice film festival, organisers said Thursday.

‘It’s one of the most surprising and strongest selections,’ the event’s director Marco Muller told reporters in Rome.

Twenty four films will compete for the festival’s top prize, including Moore’s ‘Capitalism: A Love Story’ and Ford’s ‘A Single Man’, based on Christopher Isherwood’s 1964 novel. In all more than 80 films will be presented at the festival. The jury for the 66th festival, which will run from September 2-12, will be chaired by Taiwanese film-maker Ang Lee, the Oscar-winning director of ‘Brokeback Mountain.’ -AFP
